Since 1980, the Beta Nu chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a worldwide organization of key women educators across the spectrum, has been granting scholarships to Clallam County educators. At the time of the DKG’s non-profit organization’s founding in 1920, women were not allowed to organize. The founder chose to model DKG after sororities, which women were allowed to form at that time. There are DKG chapters in all 50 states as well as many countries across the world. A focus of the organization is to give grants and scholarships to educators and future educators and to influence educational policies.
The 1978 Beta Nu chapter initiation at the Sequim Red Ranch Inn in Sequim drew 60 DKG members from across the state. Original members included women educators from across the county including Sequim’s Helen Haller and in following years, leading educators such as June Robinson as well as many other well known key Peninsula women educators.
The year following the initiation of Beta Nu, the chapter’s first president, Isabella Whitfield, bequeathed a third of her estate to Beta Nu, establishing the Scholarship Committee. Beta Nu began its scholarships the following year in 1980. In 1998 the scholarship fund received a bequest from the estate of charter member and second chapter president, Helen Gariepy. The chapter scholarship fund received first $300,000, then after the sale of a property, an additional $140,000 and immediately made efforts to step up its scholarship campaign. The Beta Nu chapter, from early on, has given grants and scholarships without consideration of gender or race.
In 2008, with diminished interest on the chapter’s $450,000 fund, Beta Nu decided to offer greater assistance by spending down the principal. From 1998 to 2022, Beta Nu has given Future Educators, who graduated from Clallam County High School or Peninsula College, $170,400 in grants toward tuition. Professional educators from Clallam and Jefferson Counties, enrolled in professional development courses, including teachers, para-educators, administrators and substitute teachers. These educators have received grants totaling $254,000 from 1999 to 2022.
In addition, Beta Nu sponsored community education projects from 2016 to 2019 totaling $116,904. Grantees receiving from $3000 to $26,000 included Feiro Marine Life Center, Clallam Mosaic, Sequim Community Orchestra, Greywolf Elementary School, Helen Haller Elementary and Franklin Elementary, Port Angeles Community Orchestra as well as several other community education projects.
Members of Beta Nu Clallam County chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma have made the decision to sunset our chapter. This local chapter of Key Women Educators (DKG) members past and present are proud of our involvement with the international organization in its goals to support professional development in educators.
The chapter's remaining funds of approximately $10,000 are being given to the Feiro Marine Life Center to initiate a Marine Science Library on site.
